5 Activities You Didn’t Know You Could Do at the YMCA

Squash

The Eau Claire YMCA has 2 squash/racquetball courts. You can book online or by talking to member services. There are even racquets you can use.

Tai Chi

There are multiple Tai Chi classes offered throughout the week at a number of YMCA Calgary locations. This ancient martial art is about centering your focus and improving your mental and physical stamina. Other martial arts offered include Hap Ki Do, Capoeira, Karate

Parkour

Parkour is a whole body sport aimed at getting around the urban landscape in the quickest, most efficient way possible – using only your body and your surroundings.

It uses movements like rolls, jumps and climbing in combination with free running; freestyle gymnastics. Youth can learn moves to scale walls, jump gaps, balance on rails, and climb poles. There are classes offered to youth at a number of YMCA Calgary locations.

Belly dancing and Social Dance

Move your hips and learn to coordinate dancing with a veil in belly dancing classes with other women. Or, as a couple, you can learn the basic steps for classic dances like the Fox Trot, Rhumba, Waltz, Jive and Two Step.

There’s even a children’s cooking class for 3-5 year olds!

The South Health Campus YMCA is part of the South Health Campus Wellness Centre which includes a Wellness Kitchen. The Cookie Monster’s class gives kids the opportunity to learn about nutrition and food preparation by making some simple and easy recipes. And they get to eat what they make!

Youth Programs at the Eau Claire YMCA

YMCA Calgary is dedicated to making sure our youth get the skills and experiences needed to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Through regular physical activity, organized sports, leadership and mentoring programs, YMCA programs will help develop you youth giving them a place to Belong, to Grow, to Thrive and to Lead.

Youth Programs include: Parkour, Soccer, Volleyball, Steve Nash Basketball, Floor Hockey, Badminton, Swim lessons, H20 Extreme, Recreational Swim Club

* Financial assistance is available.

Leadership Programs include: Jr. Lifeguard Club, Babysitting Certification, Leaders, Adventures, Leaders in Training, Active Y Kids.

* These programs are free of charge

Other options available for your youth to experience the Eau Claire YMCA –

Youth open basketball (supervised open basketball Saturdays 12-1pm)

Youth open badminton (Sundays 1-2pm)

Teen Night (ages 12-17 Fridays 7-10pm),

H20-Extreme (ages 8-12 Fridays 6-7pm).

Jr. Squash Drills (Ages 7-11 Saturdays 10-11am)

2012 Squash Tournament A Success

Eau Claire YMCA  was the proud host of a four day squash tournament this May  1 – 4.  A variety of played came from around the city to compete.

Final Matches As of Friday Morning:

The Men’s B final includes Zarley “yes the hockey player” Zalapski vs Christian “The People’s Champion” Wulff

The Ladies B final includes Sandi “Boom Boom” Bunko vs Rissa “This Jacket Fits me!” Myers.

The Ladies Open division is still up in the air – who will take home the Championship?

The Men’s Open final includes Eau Claire YMCA and Alberta Open Champion Trevor “My Last name is so awesome, I don’t need a nickname” Slaughter vs Matt “the guy who kicked my butt in the 1stround” Grigg.

Eau Claire’s Squash Booking goes Online!

Today is the first day to start booking courts online! Over the last few weeks we’ve been setting up the online system to book squash courts, racquetball/handball court and badminton courts.

Online Court Bookings (YMCA Members)
If you haven’t signed up for an online profile yet – give Member Services a call @ 403-269-6701.

The same rules apply:
-Only Members can advance book, non members must walk-in same day to book
-Max 3 court bookings per week (only 1 prime time per 7 days)
-Members can book up to 7 days in advance
-When you arrive for your court time, please sign in with the front desk with your membership card.
-Members who book courts and do not check in will have their booking privileges suspended

 


Online Court Bookings at Eau Claire!

Eau Claire YMCA will be moving to an online court booking system for Squash, Handball and Raquetball from 1st May, with reservations available from 24th April. All three courts can be booked online, over the telephone or in person at the counter. The existing booking sheets will be discontinued.

To book a court an account on the new system is required. Please contact member services  at (403) 269-6701 if you are a regular player and we will email you full instructions prior the switchover.

The existing booking policies will remain:

  • Only Members can make reservations
  • Reservations can be made seven days ahead, from 8am each morning
  • Two Prime-Time and one Non Prime-Time  booking can be made every seven days
