Yoga for Mental Illness?

Check out this article on the Yoga Journal website taking a look at how yoga has been shown to help those with mental illness:

“A new study that examined a body of research on yoga and mental health found that yoga is a promising treatment for depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, and sleep issues. The study, which was published in Frontiers in Psychiatry last week looked at more than 100 studies, focusing on 16 high-quality controlled studies.”

NIA – So What Is It Anyway? Read about the NIA Experience…

Tina Thrussel, Instructor, describes her experience with NIA:

The very first time I participated in a Nia class I cried… tears of joy!  I couldn’t help myself;  it just felt so good!  After years of feeling stiff and rigid, I felt at home in body, given permission to move my body’s way.  The music was uplifting and the movements were easy and fun.

This fusion fitness class seemed to be the answer to my prayers! The combination of the grace of the dance movements, the power of the martial arts and the relaxing stretching of yoga all felt so natural, so effortless… so freeing!!  I was hooked!

Shortly after that first class, I became a Nia teacher myself. I’ve been sharing the Joy of Movement through Nia for more than 6 years now and  I love Nia as much today as I did that first day.

Nia is:
Stress relief
A great workout
Dance-based, barefoot movement to uplifting music
Healing – on all levels!
A way to connect your mind, body and spirit
A place to feel the warmth of community
FUN!!

Nia is like chocolate – you just have to taste it to know how good it is!  Come and taste Nia at the FREE demo class at the Saddletowne YMCA on Wednesday, Feb 13 from 5-6 pm.

Seasonal Lessons from Nature

Writer Carole-Ann Mobley for Mind Body Green talks about how aligning our lifestyles with nature can lead to relaxation, calmness, and as a result, better health:

“Things will slow down more as trees drop their leaves and plants die back while their root systems dig deeper into the earth. Fall has always been a time of change for me personally. Whether it’s job changes or moving, I always start to feel the shift of things in my life this time of year. When we follow the rhythms of nature, our efforts are in alignment with the flow of the earth and things seem to go easier.”

Have Your Best Day Ever

Check out this article on the Prevention website which provides 8 tricks to feeling happier all day long, even during stressful moments:

“In a perfect world, every day would be sunny, we’d never gain weight and our checkbooks would always balance. But instead, stuff happens—and things don’t always go according to plan. Does that doom you to a day of misery? It doesn’t have to, says Jeffrey Rossman, Ph.D., director of Life Management at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass., and author of The Mind-Body Mood Solution (Rodale, 2010).”

Mental health is just as important as physical health

Written by Social Media Youth Volunteer: Anne Liao.

Taking care of yourself is important, and that doesn’t mean only doing exercise. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

* Stop worrying. Stop worrying over things that you can’t control or things that have already finished. There is no point in crying over spilt milk as they say. Also, use the time for thinking about what you can do instead of what you can’t.

* Be confident. Trust yourself and your abilities. As long as you try your best you’ll feel accomplished at the end.

* Think positive. By being more positive and looking on the bright side of things, you’ll feel more relaxed and you’ll be able to do more of the things you want to do.

* Relax and have fun. Give yourself a break sometimes and always enjoy life to the fullest.
