Obstacle Race Training

This is a great class to take whether you are looking for a program that will challenge you in different ways, push you past a fitness plateau or help prepare you for an actual Obstacle Race for the first or fiftieth time! This class will cover muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, balance, agility and grip strength with a variety of drills that will take you out of your comfort zone and drive your fitness to the next level. In addition to studio, track and weight floor work, certain classes may include workouts on the climbing wall, in the swimming pool or outdoors to improve your fitness in a range of environments and modalities.

Sport Conditioning

Are you passionate about sports? Do you want to build strength and stamina to improve your game? This class will provide sports-based exercises and drills to help you increase muscular strength & endurance, coordination, agility, quickness and stability to improve your sport performance. Exercises and drills will be determined based on the interests and needs of the group, according to their sport(s) of preference.

Nutrition 101: 7 Keys to Eating for Good Health

Are you wanting to make changes to your eating habits but are unsure where to start? Have you tried dieting and found that you were left feeling hungry and unsatisfied? Are you aware of the changes you want to make but just need a bit of extra support getting there? Are you confused by all of the conflicting nutrition information and advice being dished out by the media?

If any of these situations apply to you, this is a course you won’t want to miss! Facilitated by a Registered Dietician, this course will introduce you to simple dietary changes you can adopt that will make the most difference to your health, along with practical strategies for doing so. The science behind the information will be explored to help clarify nutritional advice and dispel the myths. In addition, you will have the opportunity to keep a personal food journal and receive weekly feedback and support on your progress and challenges over this 8-week program to give you the best chances for success in reaching your goals.

Contributing to a Healthy Community: Group Exercise Etiquette

Participating in a group exercise class can be a very motivating and enjoyable fitness activity.  There are as many reasons for taking a group class as there are people in the class!  Some are there primarily to socialize and visit with friends.  Others want to take away ideas for their personal workouts.  Still others want to work hard throughout the class and get in the most intense workout possible.  Whatever your reason for participating, please keep the following points in mind:

  • If you are there primarily to socialize, please respect the people who are there to get in a good workout and keep your conversation to a whisper level (or stay to the back of the room/pool).
  • New to group exercise?  Please come a few minutes early and let the instructor know so that she/he can ensure you stay safe during the class.
  • Ditto if you have any mobility issues that require exercise modification.
  • Please come on time – it is unsafe for you to miss the warm up and jump right into the class.
  • Stay right until the end – the stretch is the most important part of any exercise class – your muscles have worked hard and they need the flexibility training and relaxation provided during the final portion of the class.
  • Make sure you bring a water bottle.  It is critical that you stay hydrated during class to avoid cramping, headaches, nausea, etc.

Most of all, have fun – that’s what group exercise is all about!


What is Capoeira? …So much more than you might think! Give it a try & find out!

Many people watch capoeira and think it is just a dance, when in reality, it is many things simultaneously – martial art, dance, music, self-defense. Developed over 500 years ago by African slaves in Brazil, Capoeira has its roots in Afro-Brazilian culture and was said to be both a form of cultural expression and self-defense. During the last two decades, Capoeira has grown immensely as a martial art and artistic activity that incorporates rhythmic and physical expression, and can now be seen in diverse settings across the globe.

Students begin to practice capoeira for different reasons; maybe they are looking to change up their exercise routine, learn more about Brazilian culture or meet new people. Yet, because capoeira involves such a variety of elements, students inevitably discover a new interest or talent.

Besides the unique and extraordinary physical benefits of capoeira (muscle tone, core strength, balance, flexibility, speed – to name a few), capoeira is a means of developing discipline and confidence, as well as personal identity and expression.

Played in the middle of a circle called a roda, Capoeira involves a countless variety of movements – from kicks and escapes, to handstands and cartwheels – that create a dialogue between two people. This dialogue is further influenced by music created by instruments, such as the berimbau, atabaque (drum) and the pandeiro (tambourine) and singing by all people in the circle. All these elements combine to create a Capoeira roda, or circle, in which various forms of communication converge to create improvised and communal expression. Capoeiristas (people who practice capoeira) interact with one another and become active participants in the capoeira roda both physically and
musically. Students quickly realize that capoeira is much more than just a martial art, or a dance, or a fitness class – it is everything all at once.

Winter doldrums setting in? Looking for a new activity to spice things up? Missed the boat on programs starting in January? Short and sweet sessions are 5-6 weeks in length and are a great way to try something new with less financial and time commitment compared to a full-length session. MARTIAL ARTS – CAPOEIRA
Capoeira is a Brazilian mixed martial art developed 500 years ago by the slaves of Brazil who were forced to disguise their art form by incorporating elements of dance and acrobatics. Our classes are for people of all ages and abilities and involve cardiovascular and muscular components as well as various forms of Brazilian music. A practice of martial arts mixed with dance, core and muscle building.

MARTIAL ARTS – HAP KI DO
Hap Ki Do is a Korean Martial Art roughly translated as the Art of Coordinating Energy. The focus of Hap Ki Do is on self-defense through redirection of opponents’ energy to overcome adversity or violence. Participants will learn joint locks, pressure points, throws, strikes, rolls and mental concepts among other techniques.
