This recipe is one of my favourites. It can be adapted to use whatever you have in your fridge.
Chop one handful each of the following items: peppers (any colour), zucchini, mushrooms, onions. Omit or add any veggies you like.
Saute the above in 1 to 1.5 teaspoons canola oil in a large wok or frying pan. Once they start to soften, add enough fresh baby spinach to fill the pan. Cook until the spinach wilts.
Beat one egg and ½ cup egg whites and then add veggies and mix.
Pour into non-stick omelet pan and add a few tablespoons grated cheese (mozzarella, cheddar or crumbled feta).
Cook until it starts to set (about 2-3 minutes) and then carefully flip and cook the other side.
Divide into 4 and serve with salsa and whole-grain toast. Delicious, filling and healthy!

From November 27 until December 24, Crowfoot YMCA will be selling Christmas Trees!
Funds raised will support two of our important initiatives: YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and Leaders in Training Leadership Retreat.
The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign provides much-needed resources to support YMCA programs that give kids the opportunities to reach their full potential.
YMCA Strong Kids includes: helping a struggling family enjoy fun-filled activities regardless of their background or financial situation; helping a child learn to swim; helping a teen learn to lead, enabling a child/teen to participate in a recreation or physical activity.
The Leadership Retreat gives our young leaders and leaders-in-training a weekend in the mountains with other YMCA groups from across the prairies. This conference emphasizes community and stewardship and is the ultimate reward for their dedication to the leadership program.
Come buy your tree at Crowfoot YMCA, 8100 John Laurie Blvd. NW between 9am and 8pm Monday to Friday and between 10am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday.
Remember the fun you had with a hula hoop as a child? Now you can rediscover your inner child and get a great workout with a weighted hoop! Join us Monday, November 24 5:15-6:15pm to try this exciting new class for free. Please arrive early as space will be limited. We will begin hand-stamping to reserve places at 4:45pm.
Thursday, November 20 is a celebration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The theme this year is “It’s our Right to Play”.
Children learn, develop and grow through play; in recognition of this important day, the Crowfoot YMCA is pleased to offer our Pre-school Drop-in Gym free for the community. Please join us between 11:30am and 2:15pm for an active and fun time.
Many people are aware of the health benefits of exercise, but did you know that health and wellness means much more than one hour a day at the gym? If you dutifully put in your hour of exercise, but spend the other 23 hours of your day sitting, you are still considered to have a sedentary lifestyle with all of the risk factors that entails. See the following link for details: Sedentary Behaviour Risks
If you have a sedentary occupation, how can you overcome this challenge? Try getting up from your desk and walking around the office for 5 or 10 minutes every hour or two. You may feel that you’re too busy to add this into your day, however, you will likely find that these mini-breaks increase your productivity when you return to your desk. Walk to a co-worker’s desk to ask a question, rather than phoning or emailing. Even standing up at your desk and stretching once in a while will be helpful. If you are having a small meeting with just two or three people, suggest a walking meeting to your colleagues. Pedometers are an excellent way to track your activity over a day to ensure that you get in your minimum number of steps each day.
Stay-at-home parents have a great opportunity for activity; dance with your children, play tag, go for a walk to the park and push them on the swing. Not only will you enhance your own health with activity, you will set a great example for your kids and perhaps even deepen your parent-child bond!
Our Community Wellness Day is underway from now until 6pm. This event is in conjunction with Robert Thirsk High School and the Crowfoot branch of the Calgary Public Library. There are many exciting events happening at all three places, including mini-golf, foosball, air hockey, story time, Henna, face painting, a movie, pie eating contest, floor hockey, video gaming, meditation, fitness classes and much much more! Get your free passport stamped at each location and enter to win prizes!

Hap Ki Do is a Korean Martial Art roughly translated as the Art of Coordinating Energy. The focus of Hap Ki Do is on self-defense through redirection of opponents’ energy to overcome adversity or violence. Participants will learn joint locks, pressure points, throws, strikes, rolls and mental concepts among other techniques. You will grow in strength and confidence in a respectful and supportive environment. Class is offered Tuesdays 10:45-11:45am, beginning January 7; registration is on-going through the session.
Sometimes it can be challenging to get your workout in during peak hours on our weight floor. Take note of other people around you in workout areas. Help reduce wait time and maximize resources by sharing exercise equipment, machines and space to ensure everyone has the best possible experience during each visit.
If you let someone else use the machine while you have your “rest” period, several people can use the same piece of equipment at the same time.
It’s all part of the respectful and caring culture we promote and build at YMCA Calgary. And who knows, while exchanging pleasantries during interactions, you may even meet a new workout buddy!
